Ron Turker, M.D.

A funny thing happened on the way to a medical degree. In 1986, a young med student tripped over the mic stand at Wise Guys Comedy Club. Best laugh of the night!

The tug of war between comedy and medicine was on.

Start of a great piece of fiction? Sure, but this one was my reality.
I was learning to “save” people by day and, with the help of club owner Bruno Schirripa, to “kill” them by night. Life became a sleep-when-you-can roller coaster.

Eventually, the surgical career won out. But after thirty-years of caring for kids, the pull of the pen, mic, and camera grew too strong.

Having practiced from New Mexico to the Pacific Northwest, from Colombia to the Middle East, and, most recently, Ukraine, I’ve mostly put the surgical side to bed.

My journals, pencils, and keyboard demanded their due. Time to share what I’ve learned, what I’ve seen, and maybe stumble over another mic or two.

“The Wandering Jew of St. Salacious,” my debut novel, launched in March of 2023, and won the Kaye Snow award for fiction and a Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers’ Pen Award. Marty Fischer, our befuddled protagonist, wobbles us through the crazy halls of U.S. medicine.

His second story is underway.

Here’s hoping you enjoy the words, photos, and laughs. Glimpses into the grownup mind of an ADD kid.
